Body of an Amazon

From a relief metope of the temple of the Argive Heraion. Around 420 BC.
(ΕΑΜ/ΝΑΜ Γ 1574)

The figure is depicted in strong movement to the left. She wears a thin peplos, belted at the waist, leaving the left breast and shoulder exposed. The rush and sensuality that are expressed in the treatment of the female body, as well as the motion of the transparent garment that clings to it or waves in the wind, constitute features of a particular artistic style of that time, called rich or free style. The metope comes from the western face of the tempe, where the Trojan Amazonomachy is depicted.
