Body of a warrior

From a relief metope of the temple of the Argive Heraion. Around 420 BC.
(ΕΑΜ/ΝΑΜΓ 1572)

In the left hand he held a shield, while in the raised right hand a sword. The strong musculature of the abdomen, the thorax and the hips constitute features of the school of the Argive sculptor Polycleitus. The hand resting on his right side belonged to an Amazon, his defeated opponent. The metope comes from the western face of the temple, where the Trojan Amazonomachy is depicted.
