Bronze statue of a young athlete

Found in the sea off Marathon (Attica). 340-330 BC.
(ΕΑΜ/ΝΑΜ Χ 15118)

The statue probably depicts the winner of a contest, as is suggested by the band on his head. The figure fixes his eyes on an object that he held in the left hand, equally undetermined as that he was holding on the right one. Inlaid eyes of white stone and iris of yellowish glass paste. The harmonic proportions of the body, the mild, fluid musculature, the free but quiescent movement of the sculpture in space associate the work with the School of Praxiteles.
